Add Speed to Your Swing: It’s Not About Swinging Harder

Most golfers want more distance.

So what do they do?

They swing harder.

Faster backswing.

More effort.

More tension.

But the result?

Inconsistent contact.

Loss of control.

And sometimes… even less distance.

Here’s the truth:

Speed doesn’t come from trying harder.

It comes from better sequencing.

Why Swinging Harder Doesn’t Work?

When you try to force speed, your body tightens up.

  • Your arms take over
  • Your timing gets off
  • Your swing becomes rushed

Instead of gaining speed, you lose efficiency.

And without efficiency, there’s no real power.

Where Speed Actually Comes From?

Speed is built from the ground up.

It starts with:

  • Your lower body
  • Then your hips
  • Then your torso
  • Then your arms

Each part moves in sequence, not all at once.

Think of it like a chain.

If everything fires together, you lose speed.

If it flows in order, you create effortless power.

Keep It Simple: Use the Ground

You don’t need to overthink this.

Just understand one thing:

Your power starts from the ground.

When you shift your weight properly and push through the ground, your body naturally creates speed.

No forcing needed.

How to Train Speed (Without Losing Control)

If you want more speed, you need to train it, not guess it.

Try Overspeed Training

This means swinging faster than your normal speed.

Not harder. Faster.

You can do this by:

  • Making faster practice swings
  • Using lighter clubs or training aids
  • Focusing on speed, not perfection

This teaches your body how to move quicker.

The 3-Swing Speed Ladder

This is one of the easiest ways to build speed safely:

1️⃣ Smooth swing (about 70%)

2️⃣ Controlled fast swing (about 85%)

3️⃣ Max speed swing (as fast as you can, with control)

Repeat this cycle.

It trains your body to gradually increase speed without losing balance.

If you remember one thing, make it this:

Tension slows everything down.

When you grip too tight or try too hard:

  • Your swing stiffens
  • Your timing suffers
  • Your speed drops

Stay relaxed.

Loose grip. Smooth tempo.

That’s where real speed comes from.

You don’t need to swing harder to hit the ball farther.

You need:

  • Better sequencing
  • Better timing
  • Less tension

When your swing flows, speed shows up naturally.
